3 were the first mobile phone network to offer 3G mobile phones in the UK. When they launched there were not many manufacturers who supported the 3G technology so the handsets were generally bulky due to the power that the mobiles needed and they were not as good as the old mobile phones. 3G network coverage was also not great, these issues are now well and truly in the past though as nearly the whole UK is covered and the mobile handsets offered are sleek and sexy, being offered by manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson.

It was quite a while before any other UK network offered 3G services but after a couple of years Orange and Vodafone started offering third generation packages. Most of the packages available are contract deals but you can get Pas As You Go, contract deals are very good though as you often get a free mobile and lots of free minutes and texts. With a contract you can also get a new phone after your contract expires (generally 12 months), mobile phones change allot so this can be a big bonus when your contract expires. Contracts are offered by 3, Orange and Vodafone, they often offer incentives to get new customers on the 3G networks too so it's worth a look to see what's on offer. There are also usually some great special offers available on 3G networks, there is fierce competition between the networks and this is great for the customer, you can usually find deals offering half price line rental or double minutes.

The services available on 3G phones are incredible, the main feature being the ability to conduct video calls. Video calling adds hugely to a normal mobile phone conversation, you can see the other person as well as hear them. 3G also offers the ability to send video messages, this will need a mobile that is capable of filming and saving videos but once you have that you can send videos to your friends. Another advantage of 3G mobile phones is that you can use the Internet at broadband speeds, this means you can download content such as videos, MP3's, wallpapers, ring tones and lots more easily and speedily. All of the top mobile phone manufacturers support these features including Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson and they are also supported by the networks, Vodafone, Orange and 3.
